Souvenirs can represent the fantasy of elsewhere. An elsewhere that always seems far-off, strange, exotic and wonderful. This ‘snowdome’, a bricolage of travel mementoes, is a compact cultural capsule inspired by the contemporary tourist theme park where there is no dead space, no wasted time. A fictional world that is a non-stop journey of novelty, difference and photo opportunities.
Inspired by a recent online residency, “Transit Lounge ’09” (www.transitlounge.org/2009) dealing with the theme of travel, I rediscovered forgotten photos of past travels. These have been remixed and merged into a souvenir of the ideal tourist construct that is digitized and trinketized. It’s a trophy and status symbol of my experience and past. It examines a longing to be somewhere else and questions the representation of culture as entertainment in the tourist space.
